NORML Executive Director Erik Altieri explained what Jeff Sessions’ departure means for weed.
“He was one of the few remaining true old school drug warriors, this was his time to pursue his lifelong dream of cracking down on the reefer addicts, he didn’t get to do it, so now good riddance to you, Jeff Sessions,” he stated.
Altieri said that, in the short term, the pressure is off, but that we need to be cautious and defensive about who will replace Sessions.
“It’s clear that Jeff Sessions was a disaster on marijuana policy,” he stated. “We just have to capture the opportunity now to make sure our senators during the upcoming confirmation process for the new attorney general really take this point home and make sure that he is a person or she is a person that is appointed to this who will respect state marijuana laws.”
There were rumblings that Sessions’ resignation meant that Trump was going to just legalize cannabis in the U.S. as Sessions was very vocal about his hatred for all things cannabis. But Altieri doesn’t think the move has anything to do with marijuana policy, and thinks we need to work on getting Congress to pass legislation in 2019.
