John Boehner is getting into the cannabis industry.
The Republican former Speaker of the House recently joined the advisory board of Acreage Holdings, which grows, processes, and dispenses weed in 11 states.
He stated on Twitter, “I’m joining the board of #Acreage Holdings because my thinking on cannabis has evolved. I’m convinced de-scheduling the drug is needed so we can do research, help our veterans, and reverse the opioid epidemic ravaging out communities. @AcreageCannabis.”
Since Boehner resigned in 2015, he’s served as a board member for Raynolds American Inc., the 2nd largest tobacco company in the U.S. Former Massachusetts Governor William Weld will also join the Acreage Holdings’ advisory board with Boehner.
Acreage Holdings’ President stated, “We view this advocacy that we get from these two gentlemen as immensely positive for the industry.”
Boehner and Weld both say they’ve never tried cannabis, but Boehner says his views shifted when he saw the plant help his friend’s debilitating back pain. He believes his work in the political realm will help Acreage, stating, “When it comes to an issue like this, that has what I’ll call murky legal issues and political issues, we’re there to provide advice to Acreage in terms of how they work with state and federal governments, how they work with local governments, and advice on what states look promising.”
