Kevin Smith says that smoking weed saved his life when he had a massive heart attack before a show in February 2018.
The comedian was rushed to the hospital and stayed surprisingly calm the whole time. He says his doctor later told him his calm demeanor is what saved his life, and attributes it to the joint he had smoked before the show.
“You kept clam. They told you [that] you were having a massive heart attack, and you remained calm the whole time, so that joint saved your life,” he explained, paraphrasing his doctor’s words.
Smith has been very open with his fans about the heart attack — he even tweeted about it from his hospital bed stating, “After the first show this evening, I had a massive heart attack. The doctor who saved my life told me I had a 100% blockage of my LAD artery (aka “the Widow-Maker”). If I hadn’t canceled show 2 to go to the hospital, I would’ve died tonight. But for now, I’m still above ground!”
While smoking weed can cause increased anxiety in some, it’s not known to directly cause a heart attack, which is something Smith’s doctor must have been aware of.
