Study Finds CBD Might Have Antibiotic Properties

A study showed CBD might have antibiotic properties. The research was presented on June 23, 2019 at the annual meeting of the American Society for Microbiology.

Researchers found that CBD has a similar effect on bacteria to that of common antibiotics. It reportedly even worked against strains of staph and strep bacteria that have become resistant to common antibiotics.

The research is still considered preliminary, as it has yet to be published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

“It needs a lot more work to show [that CBD] would be useful to treat infections in humans,” The University of Queensland’s Mark Blascovich told Live Science. “It would be very dangerous to treat a serious infection with cannabidiol instead of one of the tried and tested antibiotics.”

The authors of the study will now begin to conduct animal studies to understand what CBD might treat, as well as how it might kill bacteria.

The company that helped fund the study, Botanix Pharmaceuticals, plans to conduct a clinical trial in humans to test whether CBD can remove staph bacteria on the skin prior to surgeries to prevent post-surgical infection.
