This documentary shows that cannabis can help kill cancer.
Actress Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein, are the executive producer and director, respectively, of “Weed the People,” which highlights the substance’s medical benefits.
“The movie ‘Weed the People’ is about families and children in particular who are suffering from pediatric cancer and the journey they go on the find innovative medicine — and the focus is cannabis,” Lake explained.
Lake and Epstein decided to make the film in 2013 when Lake and her late husband were helping a child with cancer obtain cannabis to help her get better. Through this, they wound up with a culmination of five years of footage.
The film follows five families on their journey to get medical cannabis for their children who all have various forms of pediatric cancer, many of whom find great success with the treatment.
“The reason that I think it’s great for this particular moment in time is that it’s hopeful. It’s really hopeful,” Epstein explained. “It’s really about people coming together against not great odds. And, you know, it’s not a partisan movie, it’s really looking at like, communities coming together to heal.”
“Weed the People” is screening in select theaters nationwide.
