Until recreational and medical cannabis are federally legalized, it’s nice to know where each state stands when it comes to cannabis.

In the U.S., cannabis is still classified as a Schedule I Drug, which means it’s illegal to possess or consume under federal law. Even so, reformed cannabis laws are becoming more common across the country, so we’re keeping track of decriminalization and legalization .

In some states, cannabis is decriminalized and in others it is legalized. Decriminalization is the loosening of criminal penalties on personal cannabis use even if the manufacturing and sale of it is illegal in the state. Legalization is the lifting of laws banning the possession and personal use cannabis. Though decriminalization of cannabis in certain states isn’t as lenient, it’s still a beneficial step, because people of color have historically been disproportionality and unfairly affected by cannabis criminalization

In some states, medical cannabis is legal where recreational cannabis is not. The primary difference between the two is that in a state where medical cannabis is legal, an individual needs to have a qualifying medical condition (every state has different qualifying conditions) and a recommendation from a doctor for medical cannabis in order to obtain it. In a recreational state, anyone who is of age can purchase cannabis products. Some states are also loosening laws on CBD usage. Though CBD and THC are chemically similar, CBD doesn’t have the psychoactive compounds that THC does.
